After the end of the Second World War, concentration camp doctor Josef Mengele manages to escape to South America. He goes into hiding between Buenos Aires, Paraguay and Brazil, supported by old Nazi networks and his own family in Germany, who suppress his crimes. Based on the novel by Olivier Guez, Kirill Serebrennikov tells the story not of the deeds in Auschwitz, but of the years that followed: a perpetrator who feels sorry for himself, denies any responsibility and yet profits from a system that looks the other way. The film reveals how a key Nazi criminal was able to escape justice for decades - and thus poses urgent questions about the culture of remembrance, guilt and the persistence of anti-Semitic structures right up to the present day.
