Philippe has caused a worldwide sensation with his revolutionary mix of tango and electronic music. However, the passionate musician and sought-after DJ has lost many friends recently.
Philippe Cohen Solal is a French music producer, DJ and composer who has been shaping the European music landscape since the 1980s. Born in Lyon and now based in Paris, he began his career in the club scene before achieving international fame as a producer. As co-founder of the legendary Gotan Project he revolutionised the combination of tango and electronic music, reaching a worldwide audience. His work is characterised by artistic curiosity, openness and the ability to combine seemingly distant musical traditions.
Solal moves effortlessly between electronica, world music, jazz and chanson. In addition to Gotan Project, he has realised numerous solo projects and collaborations with musicians, filmmakers and visual artists. His label Ya Basta Records is a platform for experimental and cross-genre productions. The track „Santa María (del Buen Ayre)“ became an iconic piece of modern world music worldwide. Many of his projects also have a political, social or cultural dimension. He is particularly interested in artistic personalities, outsider figures and historical narratives. With the Outsider project, he created an interdisciplinary monument to the American visionary Henry Darger.
Solal also composes film and theatre music, contributing to visual narrative forms. His musical signature combines atmosphere, precision and emotional depth. He always remains open to new technologies and aesthetic developments. His works reflect an attitude that focuses on diversity, respect and cultural dialogue. To this day, Philippe Cohen Solal is one of the most influential voices on the international fusion and electronic music scene.
